Top 5 Wednesday: Books You Thought You’d Hate But Ended Up Loving

Hey guys! I can’t remember the last time I did a Top 5 Wednesday post as I don’t really take part in them that often anymore but this topic looked like a lot of fun! There’s so many books that sprung to mind for this as they took me by complete surprise and I’m so excited to write another post gushing about them! So without any further ado, lets get into it! These are my top 5 picks:

Grace and Fury by Tracy Banghart: I have said many, many times that I do not like books about Kings and Queens, Princes and Princesses, royalty, thrones etc. so when this came in a Fairyloot box I fully expected to hate it. But I ended up being completely sucked into this world. I loved the plot, the sisters and how both of them ended up two completely different but equally terrifying situations. There was amazing character development as the story progresses which I was not expecting but I was fully on board with it! This book took me by complete surprise and I’m excited for the second book which comes out in July!

Top 5 Wednesday: Books You Liked With Tropes You Usually Hate

Hey guys! I got so excited when I saw this topic because I remember writing a post earlier in the year discussing trends I hate but now we get to praise some books for these very tropes/trends! Admittedly, I got really excited when I was writing this post and went into a lot of detail! I included a crime thriller series so I didn’t feel like I was just attacking YA books because they get a lot of stick for tropes! I really hope you enjoy! By the way, this post will have spoilers!

Love Triangle: The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare

I despise love triangles and I grimaced when I realised The Infernal Devices had a love triangle. I was fully preparing myself for three books of eye-rolling and groaning but I was actually very surprised. This is probably the only love triangle I have come across that I actually liked and it didn’t tear apart the fans. Will, Tessa and Jem have such a strong bond and it’s so easy to love all three of them that the love triangle honestly does not matter. Personally, I am a fan of Jem and Tessa together but I was happy for Will too! Both fans got what they wanted and I can’t believe Cassie actually managed to pull that off. These three are some of my favourite characters, especially Jem. I’m so glad the love triangle didn’t taint my adoration for these characters.

July Wrap Up!

Hey guys! I managed to read 8 books this month and I am so flipping happy with myself! I’ve never read this many books in one month and kept at it! Not too long ago I was struggling to read 4 books in a month and now I’m reading double that! I know a lot of people can read 15 or 20 in one month but to read 8 for me is a massive achievement and I’m super happy with myself! I also read a variety this month and didn’t just stick to the usual YA fantasy or crime thriller. Here’s what I managed to read:

The Rose Society The Midnight Star by Marie Lu: It definitely doesn’t feel like I finished this trilogy this month, feels like I read it about 4 months ago instead! This month has been a weird one, it feels like it has dragged but at the same time I’m like how the hell is it August already?! I posted a mini review for this series and if you’ve read it then you’ll know I was disappointed with this trilogy. I thought the second book was the best as it went from strength to strength the more the story progressed but then the third book felt like it was taking a step back. It was so boring and so slow, there was no development and I just felt detached from everything. I’m not sure if I will keep these books or not because I doubt I’ll read it them second time. It just wasn’t for me really and every book just left me wanting more but it failed to deliver on that sadly.

WWW Wednesday!

Hey guys! I realised before I started writing this that I haven’t done a WWW Wednesday post since January! That’s crazy! I thought I’d bring it back this week and give it a little love while I update you all on what I’ve been reading recently and my plans for the rest of the month! Lets get into it!

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Sam over at Taking on a World of Words.

To take part, all you have to do is answer the following questions:

  1. What are you currently reading?
  2. What did you recently finish reading?
  3. What do you think you’ll read next?

I was sent an ARC for review by the publisher, so big thank you to them! I absolutely love the cover, it’s so beautiful and it sounds really intriguing. I love the supernatural and I love crime thrillers, so two of my favourite things in one book is awesome! I’m honestly not very far in yet so I don’t have much of an opinion but my curiosity is piqued. So far it seems good though and I can’t wait to get further in. I’m definitely interested in the supernatural side of the story. It’s only 250 pages so hopefully I’ll finish it over the next couple of days and have a review up for it soon!

July TBR!

Hello! I kind of crashed and burned in June as I only managed to read three books. I didn’t manage to read every book on my TBR, so I’ll be carrying those over for this month. I’ve also picked some extra ones, hopefully I’ll be able to read them all! Here’s what I plan on reading:

The Midnight Star by Marie Lu: I’m glad I didn’t call it quits on this trilogy because the second book was a lot better than the first. Adelina is almost a completely different person and her actions are a lot darker and more disturbing. I’ve really loved the turn this series has taken and I can’t wait to see how it all ends!

The Things We Learn When We’re Dead by Charlie Laidlaw: This was very kindly sent to me by the author and I’ll be reading it as soon as I finish The Midnight Star. It sounds like it will be a really refreshing and interesting read!

June TBR!

Hey guys! Even though I have been completely smashing my TBR the past two months, I am still going to set a low one this month as I like only having a small TBR. Having a small one each month is definitely more manageable and I feel it’s less pressure on myself. If I set a massive TBR I’d feel so stressed all month and rush to complete it. So I’ll be setting myself 6 books and if I manage to read them all before the end of the month, then I’ll just pick up another book at random. So without further ado, here is what I want to read this month:

The Rose Society The Midnight Star by Marie Lu: This series is a trilogy and I’ve already read the first book The Young Elites, so I’m going to now read the other two. The first one was OK, not great to be honest. I wasn’t sure if it was worth continuing but apparently the second book is a lot better so I’ve decided to get them both read. I’ve heard Marie Lu is a fantastic writer, maybe this isn’t one of her best series? I probably should have started with Legend but oh well.

FairyLoot Unboxing: June 2017!

Hey guys! After not buying the last two boxes I couldn’t resist June’s theme which was Elementalists! I love anything to do with elements and I was admittedly drawn in by the first couple items they announced. I am so excited to share these with you because they are amazing! They completely blew me away and I love FairyLoot even more now!

Incase you haven’t heard of them, FairyLoot is a YA fantasy monthly subscription box based in the UK. In every book you receive one recently published Young Adult fantasy book and several bookish goodies related to the book’s theme! Lets get into the unboxing, yay!

The first thing I picked up was this beautiful candle and it has botanical toppings on which is awesome! Never seen a candle with these toppings on, it gives it a really nice touch! It smells really nice too! According to the spoiler card they made five different Stormheart Candles and they are based on storms in the book of the month and contain crystals that match those stormhearts too. I wonder what the other candles look like and if they have the same toppings but a different smell? These candles are also vegan which I love! They were made exclusively for this box!
