When a monster brutally kills her parents, Ara is saved by two beast hunters. Becoming their apprentice, she discovers serums, secret bestiary knowledge, and remarkable abilities—all to save unsuspecting souls from the same fate her parents suffered. But, terrifying creatures lurk everywhere and Ara must master the art of beast hunting quickly if she is to uncover the elusive creature plaguing the village of Cornstead.
The Beast Hunters is a thrilling read from start to finish. Christer Lende weaves together such a fantastic and compelling tale. This is a book that will capture your full attention and one you’ll think about long after you’ve turned the last page.
The story follows seventeen-year-old Ara whose life is turned upside down when her parents are murdered by a monster. She is rescued by two beast hunters, Khendric and Topper, who invite her to join them on their journey. Together, the trio hunt down a beast that is terrorising a village, but it isn’t the only monster they’re up against.
I really liked Ara and thought she was a great protagonist. At the start of the book, she’s very unsure of her future and the way she presents herself. She finds it hard to trust others and doubts the sincerity of their actions. We get to see her slowly unfurl as the story progresses and her personality really shines through. Ara is kind, caring, brave and protective of those she loves. Despite the trauma she’s been through, she bonds with Khendric and Topper and they form a great friendship. Ara experiences so much trauma, so it was great to see her go from feeling so uncertain about her future to finding something she loves.
I thought Khendric was quite a serious character, but he was very kind to Ara and quickly welcomed her into their lives. He invites her to join them and encourages her to learn about the different beasts. There’s also a bit of mystery about him too and I’m very keen to find out more about his past.
Then we have Topper and he was definitely my favourite. He’s such a charming character and I love all the different sayings he comes out with. He did seem a bit clueless at times, but it only made me love him more. He’s definitely the sort of person who you can have a laugh with, but as soon as trouble arises he’ll do anything to protect those around him.
The pacing was perfect and there was never a dull moment. There’s plenty of twists that will keep you turning the pages, but I also liked how the relationship between Khendric, Topper and Ara propelled the story forward. It was great seeing them bond so quickly and to see what a great asset Ara becomes. I’m so looking forward to seeing where she goes next and learning more about this world alongside her.
I really loved learning about all the different beasts and all the clues to look out for. It’s not your usual monsters like vampires and werewolves; there are some fantastical beasts that make the story stand out from other fantasy and paranormal books. There’s even a very helpful beastiary so you can keep track of all the different monsters.
The ending definitely hints that there’s more to come, both for the characters and the beasts they’re hunting. I would definitely like to find out more about Khendric and to see Ara hunt down some more monsters. The Beast Hunters is an action-packed, wildly entertaining and gripping read. Be sure to clear your schedule for this one because you’ll want to devour it in one sitting.
