Hey guys! Today I’ll be unboxing Illumicrate’s October book. I have seen this book floating around on Twitter and after seeing the theme card I actually guessed that it was going to be this book. I debated skipping this month because it’s science fiction and I really don’t get along with that genre. However, the customisations sounded good so I decided to stick with it. I haven’t read any reviews so I have no idea if this book is any good, I just know there has been a lot of hype around it.
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao: So, this is the book and look at that cover! I don’t think Illumicrate changed the cover and I don’t actually mind because the original is very nice. It also has stencilled edges and I’m not sure how I feel about those. I don’t really like the pattern and the top and bottom are plain, which is annoying. It would have been better to either continue the pattern all the way through or spray the rest red.
This is confusing because we have a bookplate and a digital signature. I’m not a fan of the digital signature and I don’t understand why we’ve also been given a bookplate. I never know where to stick the bookplate when there’s already a signature inside. I’d rather the book just be hand-signed to be honest.
One thing I really like is the incredible embossing on the hardback. That design is stunning and I love the quote. It’s definitely an intriguing one to include and I’m curious now to see what the context is. We also have the monthly pin, which complements that design nicely. The pins are a bit hit-and-miss with me, but I do really like this one.
Finally, we have the customisation that I was most excited about: dust jacket artwork! This is a beautiful design, however, I’m annoyed that the guy on the far right is on the folded part. You can’t see his face very well and it wouldn’t work if you wanted to flip the dust jacket. I feel like it would have worked better if it was moved over to the left a little bit and they sacrificed some of the design on the far left. Apart from that, the artwork is really stunning. I love it.
So that’s the unboxing. I feel I’ve been more negative than usual about this month’s box, but I do like the customisations and I will definitely give the book a try.
