Books I Want to Give a Second Chance

Hey guys! Today I am going to be talking about books I want to give a second chance. I’ve picked out five that I started reading but never finished. So let’s get into it!

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch:

I bought this when I was on holiday because I really liked the US cover and everyone was saying how great it is. Lots of people have said it’s a mind-bending thriller/sci-fi and it sounds really awesome but when I started reading it I was so bored. I actually picked it up recently and my bookmark is still in there from about two years ago! It has 340 pages and I only got up to page 34 before deciding to DNF it. So I definitely didn’t give this a proper chance and I should have at least read up to page 100 before making that decision. The story follows Jason who’s a pretty ordinary guy with a wife and son, but one night he is abducted and when he wakes up his life is not the one he knows. He begins to wonder if he’s losing his mind and if he dreamed his other life. I can’t really defend myself but I’m just going to say I found those first 34 pages incredibly boring, but I am ashamed I didn’t push through it until I got into the story properly. I will definitely be picking this up again!

After You by JoJo Moyes:

This is another one I didn’t get very far in, maybe the first two chapters, before I DNF’ed it. Admittedly, I enjoyed what I read but it’s what other people were saying about it that put me off continuing, which is stupid, I know. I read all these negative reviews saying how this sequel wasn’t necessary and that Me Before You should have remained a standalone. Also, a couple of people I know read it and they weren’t too impressed either. Truthfully, I thought the first book worked really well as a standalone but since I own the entire trilogy I might as well try and finish it. If you’ve read this trilogy, I’d love to know if you think it’s worth continuing? I just really loved the first book and I don’t want to feel let down because the sequel is really underwhelming. I mean, it’s good that we get to see Lou move on but from the reviews I’ve read After You is really disappointing.

What You Did by Claire McGowan:

I honestly don’t know why I DNF’ed this one because I was loving the story. It might have been that I needed to read another book so I thought I’d come back to it but because I was reading an eBook on my phone, I just forgot about it? I’m a terrible reader sometimes. It has really mixed reviews looking at Goodreads but I definitely want to go back to it despite those reviews because of how much I was enjoying it. The only thing is, it’s a he said/she said story because it follows six university friends who reunite after twenty years and after a night of drinking, one of them accuses another of rape. The wife has to decide whether she believes her husband of her best friend. I don’t know how well this will be done, judging by the reviews, not very. I’m still going to read it though. I didn’t like the last he said/she said book I read so it will be interesting to see what I think of this one.

Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus:

I can’t believe I DNF’ed this one after how much I enjoyed One Of Us Is Lying, but I didn’t find it anywhere near as good and I didn’t really like the characters. I saw that it has mixed reviews on Goodreads – some people thought it was great, others said it was mediocre. The general impression though was that it’s not as good as her first book. It’s set in a small town called Echo Ridge where two homecoming queens have been murdered and both cases remain unsolved. Everyone in the town is hiding something and it’s safest to keep your secrets to yourself. I do want to give this another chance though because my friend read it and she said it’s definitely worth reading. We have similar taste in books so if she likes this, then hopefully I will too.

The Archived by Victoria Schwab:

I love Schwab’s writing and think she’s incredibly talented and creative. She has written some of my favourite series (ADSOM/Vicious), so I’m not really sure why I never finished The Archived. I started it but then I got sick and decided to come back to it when I was feeling better but obviously I never did. In this world, the dead rest on shelves like books and each body has a story to tell. The dead are called Histories and their memories can be accessed by Librarians. It sounds so creepy and like all of Schwab’s books, like nothing I’ve ever come across before. This series also has so many great reviews, but I think people have been waiting a long time for a third book so I hope The Unbound doesn’t end on a cliffhanger. Have you read this series? I’d love to know what you thought of it as I don’t actually see anyone talking about these books. They did come out a while a go though.

So these are five books that I want to give a second chance! If you’ve read any of them, I’d love to know what your thoughts! Are they worth the read? Feel feel to leave a comment below. I hope you enjoyed this post and thank you so much for reading!
