Mid-Year Freak Out Book Tag!

Hey guys! My lovely friend Kate did this tag last week and I can’t believe it’s that time of the year already! This is by far one of my most favourite tags to do and I love revisiting what I’ve read so far each year. So that’s what I’m bringing you all day and first, like Kate, I just want to take a look at my reading challenge:

Considering I was in a book slump for the first 2-3 months of the year, I’m really pleased that I’ve managed to claw my way back and I’m sitting pretty comfortably at 42 books! I can’t believe I’m still 6 books ahead of schedule, that is crazy! I should easily make 80!

Vengeful

1) Best book you’ve read so far in 2019

This was hard as I’ve actually read quite a few awesome books this year already but I’m going to go with Vengeful by V.E. Schwab. I was so happy but also very sad when I finished this because I want and need more of these characters. This was fantastic from start to finish and Victor and Eli are easily the most fascinating villains I have come across. I love how they started out wanting to do good but then it all got so twisted and they ended up as the villains of the story. I love books like this so much!

Legendary

2) Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2019

I was kinda tempted to say Vengeful again but Legendary by Stephanie Garber was another sequel I really loved so I’ll go with that! Stephanie’s writing is so magical, she completely brings the story to life. I love the world and the characters she has created. Highly recommend this series!

3) New release you haven’t read yet, but want to

Darkdawn

4) Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

Have we been waiting like 2 years for this now? Mental. Jay Kristoff be writing every book under the sun but this one. It’s finally set for a September release and I can’t wait! I’m definitely going to need to reread Nevernight to refresh my memory.

Cross Her Heart

5) Biggest disappointment

This is my first and only 1 star read of the year so far. I was not impressed and nearly didn’t finish it so many times. I thought the plot was ridiculous and I couldn’t stand the main characters. Ungrateful teenagers really get on my nerves and when you have to read the POV of one… swear I was ready to jump into the book and shake her to death. The ending was not worth the wait and I wished I did DNF’ed it!

Warcross

6) Biggest surprise

Marie Lu is definitely a hit and miss author for me. I didn’t like her Young Elites trilogy but I really enjoyed Batman: Nightwalker. I was thoroughly expecting to hate Warcross but I actually loved it very much. The world building was incredible and I fell in love with the characters. I loved the backstory for Hideo Tanaka, it was so heartbreaking. It definitely worked better as a duology and I’m glad she didn’t decide to make it a trilogy.

8) Newest fictional crush

I don’t have one yet… sorry!

Shatter Me

9) Newest favourite character

Warner from Shatter Me. Yes yes yes. He is so precious and he must be protected even though he’s kinda evil but not really. Such a complicated but loveable character.

Let Me Lie

10) Book that made you cry

Some parts of this book focus on mental health which I wasn’t expecting and I did really love it but the ending was so unexpected that it did make me cry a little!

Red Scrolls of Magic

11) Book that made you happy

I was enclosed in my happy little bubble the whole time I was reading this, blissfully unaware of the outside world. I love Alec and Magnus so much and I’m ecstatic that they finally have their own series.

12) Favourite book to film adaptation you saw this year

I don’t remember watching any this year, unfortunately! If I have then it shows they weren’t very memorable!

Lies

13) Favourite review you’ve written this year

I really enjoyed writing my review of Lies by T.M. Logan. This book was absolutely brilliant and had so many shocking twists – highly recommend it!

14) Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

Hands down FairyLoot’s edition of Finale by Stephanie Garber – it’s absolutely gorgeous! I loved the sprayed and stencilled edges! For some crazy reason I still haven’t read this yet but it’s at the top of my TBR, I promise!

15) What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

So I finally read The Grisha trilogy in May and I really loved it! I’d heard many mixed things about it and I was definitely not expecting to love it as much as I did. Now I want to read the rest of the Grisha books in the order they were published. I’m most excited to read King of Scars but I want to wait until I’ve read Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom first just incase I miss anything!

So there we have it! I had a lot of fun revisiting this tag for the third time and hopefully I’ll do it again next year! Have you read any of the books I picked out? What did you think of them? Have you done this tag yet? Feel free to leave a comment below! I hope you enjoyed this post and thank you so much for reading!
