Annoying book cover changes!

Hey guys! I have been wanting to do this post for a really long time but I’ve never found the time to write it until now! I’ve just always felt so annoyed when a publisher has randomly changed the covers halfway through a series and I feel like venting about it! I hope you enjoy and I’m curious to see if you agree with me on any of these!

1) An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

This has by far been the most annoying series for cover changes. I love these books but the covers are so damn mismatched. I really wish the publishers would just make up their minds because this series looks a complete mess. All of the books are different sizes too! Reaper is the biggest book and then Torch is so tiny in comparison! It’s like the small UK hardback size and it just bugs me. I just want to throw them all out and buy matching covers but I have looked everywhere and these are currently the only UK covers, ugh! I could buy the American ones but I can’t make up my mind if I like them or not. I swear I’ll be so mad if the fourth book is different AGAIN.

2) The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles

The one on the left is the original cover and the other two are the new covers. This doesn’t annoy me too much because I actually like the new covers, I think they are super pretty. But it does still annoy me that they just decided to completely change the covers in the middle of the series like that. It’s especially annoying for someone who prefers the original and now doesn’t have a matching second book! I have no idea if there will be more books or if it’s only a duology. If it is then I can get behind the new covers but if there’s more books to come I’m not feeling very confident that the covers will stay the same.

3) Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

This just… ugh. This annoyed me so, so much. I know it’s only a very tiny change but it still irritated me nonetheless. I really don’t understand why they made the font an ugly grey colour. The old font was perfect and complimented the cover very nicely but the new font is so dull. I know it’s a new publisher and maybe they did it to differentiate themselves from the old publisher? I don’t know but it still made me angry. Also another thing is the old books are super floppy and the new one is so stiff. I just don’t think it matches the old covers at all and I’m frustrated. UK covers suck sometimes.

4) Weregirl by C.D. Bell

I can’t complain too much about this because I actually really like the last cover but again I am irritated that it doesn’t really match the first two. The font is still the same but instead of saying A Weregirl Novel it now just says Weregirl before the title of the third book. Plus the background isn’t white, it’s more grey and has the trees along the bottom. It’s still a very pretty cover but why the sudden change? It just ticked me off.

5) The Empress by S.J. Kincaid

This really got on my damn nerves. So The Diabolic was released in the UK in hardback and I thought it had a really pretty cover. Then they released that absolute nightmare on the right in PAPERBACK. Not HARDBACK. PAPERBACK. I was so angry, it’s so infuriating when they give you the first book in hardback and the second in paperback. How dare you? I was so disgusted. Say I am overreacting all you want but I like to have matching covers, all in the right sizes and you can tell they are part of the same series! Like that bright blue cover with orange font is not a good look. Plus the thing in the middle, I don’t like that. No, no, no. They have basically taken the decent looking US cover and made it completely hideous. I haven’t bought it yet because I honestly don’t want that on my shelf.

So I’ve only done five for now but I could probably find some more to rant about, easy! What do you think of these cover changes? Did they annoy you as well? If not, have there been any changes to other books that have annoyed you? Please feel free to leave a comment below! I hope you enjoyed this post and thank you so much for reading!

The cover changes for the An Ember in the Ashes series really annoy me, I liked both sets of the first two cover changes and I wish they would have stuck with one of them because I’m not a fan at all of the third cover change. The third one of the US covers has a girl on the cover (or another character in the series depending on which book it is) and I do understand why the author chose to do this, but people on covers is overused and I feel like it was a step down from the previous two.

I’m so glad you agree, I really can’t stand book covers with people on! It’s just so boring and so plain. They could do ANYTHING and they stick a person on there! I mean I’m super happy for Sabaa she got what she wanted and she really loves them but I just think the first two covers were so much better. Plus, if they aren’t even going to do the same covers in the UK, why did ours need to change? It’s so flipping annoying. The third book cover is completely different to the first two and you wouldn’t have a clue it was part of the same series.

I agree, if something’s not broken don’t try and fix it, the first two sets of covers were fine, they didn’t need to be changed. The third cover change are some of my least favorite cover changes.

I’m sure when all the books were released they could have changed the covers then rather than messing about with it now 😒 It’s not really fair on the readers who liked the original covers and now can never have a complete set of them. Same and I’m actually nervous to see what the fourth cover will look like now! Probably be another disaster.

If they do change the covers again for the fourth book, I hope it’s either to one of the previous sets of covers or to something that’s at least better than the current set.

Nothing annoys me more than cover changes, especially when they change the cover just as the last book in a series is released. They could at least wait until the series is complete and then change the covers haha!

I know! It’s so annoying that you buy the first book and then have to buy it again with the new cover just so they match! It really gets on my nerves when I have a mismatched series, the amount of times I’ve donated a book and bought it again just so my series all has the same covers… so annoying. Now my covers for the Ember series are a mess and I’ll probably end up re-buying them when the publishers finally get their act together and make all the damn covers match 🙃

      • Rose says:

Me too! The height differences on some of them drive me crazy as well, it’s silly how many different sizes there are for paperbacks haha. Hopefully it doesn’t take them long to make all the covers match again!

      • Beth says:

I know! Why when they first publish a paperback is it absolutely gigantic 🙃 so many times I’ve bought the first book in a series in the standard size and then when the second book has published it’s like triple the size of the first one 🤦‍♀️
