Books That Surprised Me!

Hey guys! Today I am doing something a little different… I am going to talk about books that I thought I wouldn’t like but actually ended up loving! These are books that either belong to a genre that I don’t normally read or heard bad things about which put me off reading the book. But in the end it didn’t really matter because I ended up loving them anyway! So lets get into it!

Me before you

1) Me Before You by JoJo Moyes

This book belongs to a genre that I really love to avoid and definitely do not read. Yes, that is correct. I am not a fan of romance books. I’m just not a very romantic person and reading about other people falling in love is just not something I want to do. The reason why I read Me Before You though is because my friend wrote a review for it on her blog and she made it sound really interesting. She asked me to read it and it was really cheap on Amazon so I just decided to buy it and give it a shot. I actually ended up really loving it and I ended up reading it really quickly because I was just so absorbed in the story. I loved all the characters and I was really not expecting the ending. This book was nothing like I thought it would be and it exceeded my expectations. I ended up watching the film and that was such a wonderful portrayal of the book, I loved it! I have the second book After You but I’m not sure if I’m going to read it or not because I’ve not heard great things about it. I am disappointed about that but to be honest I was happy with the first book being a standalone and didn’t see the reason for a second book. So I don’t know what I will do yet about that! I need someone to convince me to read it!

the-martian

2) The Martian by Andy Weir

I received this as a Secret Santa gift from my friend at work who thought I’d really like it. Admittedly, it took me ages to read it because I thought I wouldn’t like it. I don’t really read Science Fiction books because they are just not books I end up loving. I find them confusing and difficult to follow, so naturally, I thought this book would also be confusing and difficult to follow. Plus, I thought it would be all about science and science was not a subject I was good at in school. But I decided to just give it a try anyway because it was a really nice gift from my friend. I ended up LOVING IT! Mark Watney is such a sarcastic and sassy character. He is literally stranded on Mars and faces dying from starvation but he still finds ways to be happy and insult people. I don’t think this book would have worked with anyone else other than Mark Watney. He really does make this book amazing. I also really loved how everything was explained to you in careful detail. There was nothing in this book that wasn’t explained to you and I just really loved that. It made the story so much easier to follow and it didn’t matter that I hated science because while I read this book I actually really loved science and found it interesting. I loved the writing, the characters, the detail! I was completely sucked into the story and I loved it. Also if you haven’t seen the film, you need to! It matches the book perfectly and just follows it step by step. Finally someone who USES the book when writing the film!

1984

3) Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell

Another book that I received as a present for Christmas! I’d actually been wanting to read this book for years but never got around to buying it. I was absolutely delighted when I unwrapped it and couldn’t wait to read it! I’d heard so many great things about it and so many people had recommended it to me. I was still nervous about reading it though because it’s such a highly regarded classic and those are either a hit or miss for me. Sometimes I end up loving them, a lot of the time I end up loathing them. But I was actually really surprised with Nineteen Eighty-Four! It was such an interesting and a really intense story! Basically everyone is controlled by Big Brother and they aren’t allowed to have any original thoughts. If anyone is suspected of having their own thoughts and ideas that don’t follow Big Brother then they are arrested and obliterated by the Thought Police. Everyone is constantly monitored and privacy doesn’t exist. Even in their own homes they are monitored through telescreens and it is honestly so creepy! People aren’t even allowed to keep their own journals because that is seen as a way for them to express their own thoughts. I found this book really interesting and at the same time absolutely terrifying. It really surprised me because I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did! Really wished I had picked this book up sooner but at the same time I’m glad I didn’t. I think this is a book you can appreciate more as an adult and I’m not sure my younger self would have loved it as much!

Mirror, Mirror

4) Mirror, Mirror by Cara Delevingne

The only reason I wanted to read this book was because it was by Cara Delevingne and there was no other reason. I received a free digital copy on NetGalley and I honestly was not expecting to like this book. I thought it would be terrible but I was really curious to see what it was like because it was written by Cara. I was definitely not expecting to love it as much as I did and I was honestly so surprised. I ended up really loving this book and I completely fell in love with all of the characters. I was blown away by how much I wanted to devour this book. I struggled to put it down and was reading snippets of it whenever I could find time. I’m actually really excited now to see if she writes any other books in the future! I hope she does!

If We Were Villains

5) If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

You probably all know by now that this was my favourite book of 2017 and probably one of my all-time favourite books forever now! I got an email from the publisher inviting me to read an ARC of this and take part in a blog tour. At first I was hesitant because it revolves a lot around Shakespeare and his plays. I absolutely loathe Shakespeare, I just cannot read any of his plays without getting a headache. The only one I actually liked a tiny bit was Othello but I have yet to find another! Then I decided I was judging this book too strongly and I might actually liked it so I said yes. Fast forward like a week and I was reading the ARC. Damn. Damn. Damn. This book was so freaking amazing! It completely floored me and left me speechless! The writing was incredible and it was so terrifying how the author pulled me right into the story. Her scenes were so vivid at times I felt like I was standing right there among the characters. This book was so heartbreaking and so emotional. It was such an incredible book and M.L. Rio is incredibly talented. If you like crime thrillers and haven’t read this book then you really need to because you are seriously missing out!

I didn’t realise how much detail I would go into when writing about these books! At least you can tell how much I truly loved them and how much they exceeded my expectations! What are some books that surprised you? Feel free to leave a comment below! I hope you enjoyed this post and thank you so much for reading!

Same I actually thought it was going to be really boring and uninteresting 😂😂 I’m so glad I let it prove me wrong and teach me not to judge a book so harshly 😂🤦‍♀️ Ooh please do! I really hope you like it 🙏
