Totally Should’ve Book Tag!

Since I did the Totally Didn’t book tag on Friday I thought I would do the Totally Should’ve tag today! You can probably tell from the title that this tag is the complete opposite of the Totally Didn’t tag. Again I had to think really hard about my answers and spend the afternoon sitting on my bed frowning at all my books. Some of these questions were actually quite hard! I feel like I’ve used a lot of choices from the last one. I tried to use others but I really couldn’t think of any.

The Host

1) Totally should’ve gotten a sequel

Definitely The Host by Stephenie Meyer. I’m pretty sure the majority of people who read this wanted there to be a sequel and the ending to me implied that there would be a sequel and that their story wasn’t over. But, unfortunately, it’s been like eight years almost and we still don’t have a sequel. I just think there is so much more that can be said about this world and the characters. The Host was such a captivating book once you got past the slow start. I’d read a second book if she ever decided to publish one.

2) Totally should’ve had a spin off series

I know The Maze Runner had a prequel with a different set of characters showing what happened when the Flare hits and how they are trying to survive, etc. It was good but to me it felt a little rushed. I think I would have preferred a spin off series where there’s at least three books. Kind of like when the The Walking Dead got a spin off series called Fear the Walking Dead only better because I don’t really like FTWD. But I’m really sad because he said he isn’t writing anymore Maze Runner books now. I think there is still so much more that can be said about this world and I’m devastated that it’s over.

3) An author who totally should write more books

Definitely Becca Fitzpatrick! I’ve said it several times already and I’ll say it again, I love her writing! She has the Hush Hush series which is four books and then two standalones. That comes to six books in total which is impressive but since Hush Hush is a series she only really has three books with separate characters and worlds. She definitely needs to write a ton more books because I just can’t get enough of her writing. I love her world building and her characters she is one of my favourite authors and I just need more from her. Hopefully she is currently working on another book.

4) A character who should’ve totally ended up with someone else

I know in the last post I complained about the love triangle in the Firebird trilogy but I really, really, really, really wanted Theo and Marguerite to end up together. Paul was such a boring character and I saw zero chemistry with him and Marguerite. I was all about Theo and Marguerite but it was made clear right from the start that they would never be together and that made me so mad but whatever. It’s done now.

Allegiant

5) Totally should’ve ended differently

I will pick Allegiant by Veronica Roth and if you have read it then you will know why. Even though it was published a while ago now I won’t go into details because it’s a major spoiler for people who haven’t read it. I’m kind of disappointed we will never know if that’s how the films were going to end but I’m not surprised they flopped because the last film was so boring. I didn’t have a clue what was happening and stopped paying attention halfway through. Such a shame because these books deserved better.

6) Totally should’ve had a movie franchise

I have to agree with Emma and say The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. I was so disappointed with the film and the TV show isn’t much better. At the minute I’m not really liking the show and am watching it purely for Alec and Magnus just because I think they are really awesome actors. Maybe because it’s six books it seems better for it to be a TV show but they haven’t done it right at all and like Emma said as a film franchise it would get more merchandise and popularity. So sad how it couldn’t have been up there with Harry Potter, Twilight, The Maze Runner, etc.

7) Totally should’ve had a TV show

I think His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman would have made a great TV show! The film was a completely flop but I think they made it too rushed and it would have been better as a TV show. So much happens in these books and a TV show would give them opportunity to explore that more slowly and space it out more. I would definitely watch a TV show if they ever made one and I’m sure lots of other people would too!

8) Totally should’ve had only one point of view

For this one I’m easily going to say Ice Like Fire and Frost Like Night by Sara Raasch. I understand why she had more than one point of view but Mather’s point of view in Ice Like Fire was so boring! I wanted to strangle him and beat him over the the head in the hopes that I’d knock some sense into him. In every single chapter of his he just whined about his life and how much he hated himself. I absolutely cannot stand whiny characters, I just can’t. And if that wasn’t bad we then had Ceridwen in Frost Like Night who liked to whine just as much as Mather did! I just didn’t feel that these added POVs were completely necessary when they just complained about everything all the time. I would have preferred one POV in every book, not just the first.

9) Totally should have a cover change

I don’t like the Vampire Academy books but they desperately need a cover change because those covers are disgusting. I hate faces on covers and especially when the model on the cover doesn’t even remotely look like the main character. Plus why is she smiling like that? It’s so weird. I pity anyone who has to look at these covers on their bookshelves. Of all the covers these books could have got, they go and give them these ones. Sigh. Why do some books get multiple cover changes but then others are stuck with the originals?

10) Totally should’ve kept the original covers

House of Night series by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast… What were they thinking? Do these new covers look like a book about vampires to you? All bright colours and flowery patterns and just girly looking in general. These are fantasy books with dark and disturbing scenes at times and the covers should depict that. I liked the original covers because they were all black and they made the book look very dark in general. They fit with the story and I’m disappointed with these new covers.

11) Totally should’ve stopped at book one

I think we would all have been saved a lot of time and disappointment if Shiver was a standalone. Just saying.

So that is the end of the Totally Should’ve tag! Again I hope you guys enjoyed and feel free to comment below if you agree or disagree with any of my choices. I won’t be tagging anyone because, like the last one, this tag is quite old and a lot of people might have already done it! Thank you so much for reading!

I am interested by your opinion on shadowhunters because I really think that a TV show has way more potential for those books. The reason (well there were so many reasons that the movie sucked, but) the movie was so bad was because they tried to smash everything in City of Bones into under 2 hours. Cassie writes heavy, detailed books that need more time to be represented well. I agree that the show is lame, and I wish it was better, I am watching with the hope that it will get better over time, even thought they kind of skipped over everything from City of Ashes and killed off some people that should have been super important later on. In general, I think Cassie’s books would be much better adapted into TV shows becuase movies just don’t have enough time in a single film for each book to be well represented in a way that fans could be happy with. But I absolutely agree that they could be doing a much better job with the show (I think it mostly has to do with the network the rights went to, it’s disappointing).

It’s hard to say… A collection of films might have got more popularity and merchandise with all the trailers and the build up for each film. But then the first film did feel like it crammed everything in which is probably why it wasn’t very good! I’m not trying to say a film would be better, I just think it would have been nice to see it up there along with Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, etc. 🙂 I definitely agree a TV show is probably better because her books are incredibly detailed and very descriptive. It would give them more freedom to explore each book, just a shame that hasn’t turned out very well, either! I honestly have no idea what they are even doing with the show a lot of stuff doesn’t even make sense to me! Yeah I think if it went to The CW it could have become something great like The Vampire Diaries before that went downhill. These books deserved so much better, such a shame!

      • Katie G says:

I 100% agree if CW had bought he rights it would be much better, but nope 🤷🏻‍♀️ I had high hopes for the movie when it came out but I was so disappointed. I’m just glad they didn’t try to force film sequels like with Percy Jackson or divergent

      • Beth says:

Oh God Divergent turned out to be a right mess 🙈 The last film was so bad! I had no idea what was happening, I’ve never been so lost before watching a film 🙈 I’m kinda disappointed though that we will never find out how it all ends now… Like was it going to have the same ending as the books or different? So annoying we will never know 😦

      • Katie G says:

Haha I never even watched the last two. I saw divergent, thought it was alright, then heard only bad things about the rest so I didn’t even bother. I do wonder if they would have changed the ending though. I never liked the way the book ended

      • Beth says:

Haha Insurgent was terrible. The start was good but halfway through it became so awful. They had a perfectly good book to use right in front of them and they didn’t use it! It got me thinking it would be different just because it was called Ascendant. I wish they didn’t decide to split the last book in two that was so unnecessary. It could have easily been one film 😦

oh and also I agree that the VA covers suck. They have actually changed once (in the US at least) but they kept the original photos and just slapped on the giant “VA” I hate them, but still love the books haha

    • Beth says:

I hate when they do that! They just make silly little changes like the background colour or the font. Why even bother?? Just give us a new cover! xD

      • Katie G says:

Yeah the VA ones have always been so so but I liked it better when they were just the girl than with the colors and giant letters lol I purposely bought the last three before the new covers took them all out because the new ones are so uglyyyy

      • Beth says:

I don’t think anyone likes the new ones 😂 How come like the TMI books have 3 different UK covers but Vampire Academy can’t get new covers? 🤔 I really wanna know how they decide when a book needs a new cover xD

      • Katie G says:

I love the new Cassie Clare covers! I mean I’m broke so I don’t won’t be buying them but I love the scenes on the spines 😍 so pretty. But I also love the original covers

      • Beth says:

I got the TMI boxset for £8 I was so chuffed XD Haven’t bought the TID one though because I’d have to buy them separately and I want to save my money for other books haha xD The spine is gorgeous 😍👌 SAME! You are the first person I have heard say that! Everyone else hates the originals but I bloody love them, they are so pretty haha. I am in love with the original CoHF cover 😍

      • Katie G says:

Yeah something about the originals is just so pretty, especially the TID covers. I LOVE clockwork princess and yeah COHF is great, they all look so good together. I think that’s the best part that a trio of series all go together really nicely on the bookshelf lol

      • Katie G says:

Yeah idk either, I’ve been working at Barnes and noble for almost 4 years and I don’t know haha. It may have to do with rebranding when the sales dip lower to see if it’ll sell better again but I really have no clue

      • Beth says:

You work in Barnes and Noble?! So jealous! You are so lucky! Being able to work surrounded by books… heaven xD

      • Katie G says:

Haha yeah it’s on and off since I go to college across the country from home but it was my first job and I was so lucky to find one I loved! I just go back over my school breaks now 🙂
