Synopsis:

For the perfect love, what would you be willing to lose?

It’s been a shattering year for seventeen-year-old Zoe, who’s still reeling from her father’s shocking death in a caving accident and her neighbors’ mysterious disappearance from their own home. Then on a terrifying subzero, blizzardy night in Montana, she and her brother are brutally attacked in the woods–only to be rescued by a mysterious bounty hunter they call X.

X is no ordinary bounty hunter. He is from a hell called the Lowlands, sent to claim the soul of Zoe’s evil attacker and others like him. X is forbidden from revealing himself to anyone other than his prey, but he casts aside the Lowlands’ rules for Zoe. As they learn more about their colliding worlds, they begin to question the past, their fate, and their future. But escaping the Lowlands and the ties that bind X might mean the ultimate sacrifice for them both.

Gripping and full of heart, this epic start to a new series will bring readers right to the edge of everything.

My review:

Thank you to NetGalley for a free digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest view.

This book begins with a prologue and it was very intriguing and mysterious. It pulled me into the story straight away because I wanted to find out what had happened and why we were suddenly in this scene. The writing was really interesting and the story was very refreshing because it was different to what I normally read. Reading about people called bounty hunters who collect people’s souls and then drag them down to Hell or Lowlands as it’s known in this book, was very interesting.

I really liked Zoe and thought she was a very believable character. At first she did annoy me because she came across as a very rude person but once you got past that and delved more deeper into the story, it was easy to understand why she sometimes acted the way she did. You could easily relate to her because she had been through a lot in such a short amount of time and everything she did was tied back to her grief for her father’s death and her neighbour’s disappearance. The more pages I read the more I started to like her and understand her character more. I could tell she cared deeply for her younger brother and she just wanted him to be safe. I loved how there was so much action in just the first scene, I loved every page I read and I wanted more of this story.

I loved X’s character and how alien he appeared because he’d never known what it was like living in the Overworld as they called it, surrounded by people he loved and who loved him back. His only purpose for living was just collecting people’s souls and not to interact with others so when their two worlds collide, it was interesting seeing how people from both worlds reacted to their love. It’s basically Forbidden love and they have to fight for their right to be together.

It was such a unique story full of very unique characters and I was glad I stumbled across this book on NetGalley. The only thing that did annoy me was that when Zoe and X met it was very insta-love, everything X did from that point onwards was to show off to Zoe because he loved her even though he hadn’t spoken two words to her. Zoe also felt very protective of X and even gave him the name X because he told her he didn’t have one. I kinda rolled my eyes at this insta-love but like I said the story was refreshing and I couldn’t put this book down despite the insta-love between them.

I love how action-packed and how intense the ending was! I was very much on the edge of my seat, desperate to find out how it all ended. There were a lot of twists and turns and it was a struggle to put my iPad down at times. I kept glancing at bottom of the page to see how long I had left to go and if I could squeeze in the end before I went to bed. I was completely and utterly hooked on the story. I did really enjoy the ending, it wrapped the first book up nicely but also left it on a cliffhanger ready for the second book in the series.

I hadn’t realised going into this book that it was a series and only found out when I was near the end of the book. I also noticed that since I was 90% in it couldn’t all be wrapped up that quick! I am really excited for the second book because that ending! I need to find out what happens next! This story was very gripping and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book! I’ll certainly be recommending this book to everyone I know!
